ADAS Calibration

ADAS Can Prevent 40% of crashes, 37% of vehicular injuries, and 29% of vehicular deaths. What is ADAS...

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), are technology features that are designed to improve driver safety and prevent automotive accidents.

ADAS utilizes sensors such as radar, sonar, lidar, and cameras to perceive the world around the vehicle, and either provide critical information to the driver or take automatic action to avoid or mitigate the effects of a crash.

ADAS systems are designed to increase driver safety and decrease the number and/or severity of automotive accidents.

Traditionally, ADAS Calibration was performed at the dealership. However, Daniels Tire Service of Bermuda Dunes, CA is now able to perform this service in-house with their new state-of-the-art equipment.

What is ADAS Calibration...

ADAS calibration, or recalibration, is the alignment and testing of your electronic aiming sensors. These sensors collect data about your surroundings as you drive that assist your vehicle’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). These include but are not limited to your forward collision warnings, lane departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, and other driver assistance features.

ADAS sensors are precision calibrated from the factory when you purchase your vehicle. If there is damage to your vehicle, from an accident or even windshield replacement, there is a high likelihood that you will require these sensors to be recalibrated.

Common ADAS Applications

What they are and what they do...

ADAS Sensor Applications and how they apply to your vehicle and driving.ACC ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL Adjusts vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance with vehicles ahead.

AVM AROUND VIEW MONITORING Provides 360-degree, bird'-eye view to help drivers park more easily.

RCW REAR COLLISION WARNING Warns the driver of vehicles coming close to the rear of their vehicle.

LDW LANE DEPARTURE WARNING Warns drivers when their vehicle drifts out of their lane.

APA AUTOMATED PARKING ASSIST Provides audible, visual, or haptic obstruction warnings during low-speed parking maneuvers.

LIDAR LIGHT IMAGING DETECTION Detects objects in vehicle vicinity to create a 3D map of objects and surroundings.

NVS NIGHT VISION SYSTEM Improves a driver's vision in darkness or poor weather.

BSD BLIND SPOT DETECTION Detects and warns drivers of vehicles in either driver or passenger rear corners (blind spot).

PD PEDESTRIAN DETECTION Alerts the driver to the presence of a pedestrian in front of their vehicle.

TSR TRAFFIC SIGN RECOGNITION Recognizes traffic sign info and visually relays it to the driver.

How it’s Calibrated...

Different vehicles will require one, or possibly both, of the two different calibration techniques: static calibration and dynamic calibration.

Statis calibration requires your vehicle to be in a stationary location with certain conditions, such as the vehicle being placed on a lift, no reflective materials, and having 30’ to 50’ of clear space around the vehicle so the sensors have a clear and unobstructed view.

Dynamic calibration requires your vehicle to be on the move in traffic with an ADAS scan tool connected to the vehicle during the calibration process. This method is usually completed after a static calibration is completed.

When is ADAS Calibration Required?

Whenever an ADAS sensor's aiming is disrupted in any way, an ADAS calibration is required. Disruption can happen during a collision, even a minor fender bender, or as a result of common services like windshield replacement, suspension repair, or wheel alignment.

Safety system checks should be performed on a semi-regular basis.

  • After minor collisions
  • Collision repairs
  • Windshield or side view mirror replacement
  • Sensor/mounting bracket replacement
  • Suspension repairs
  • Wheel alignment
  • Change in ride height or tire size
  • Front air bag deployment if deflected off windshield
  • Related DTC is present
  • ADAS-related TSBs
