Eco-Friendly Driving Habits to Celebrate Earth Day

posted on

Owning a vehicle is a great convenience.  However, we often forget about the emissions created by the burning of gasoline that contributes to global climate issues. Daniels Tire Service wants to contribute to the Earth Day cause so we have composed these helpful tips on how to “drive green”.

Before you hit the road consider these suggestions:

1) Keep tires properly inflated - Properly inflated tires are safer, last longer, and can improve your gas mileage

2) Check and replace air filters regularly - Replacing a clogged or dirty air filter can improve your vehicle’s gas mileage by as much as 10% according to Department of Energy, and keeps impurities from damaging the inside of your engine.

3) Save weight – Extra weight means extra fuel so if you don’t need it, leave it at home.

4) Cut drag – Roof-racks or cargo carriers add to your fuel consumption. If you’re not using them, take them off your car.

5) Don’t park & idle -  Turn off the engine. It takes less fuel to re-start your vehicle than to keep it running.

6) Combine short trips - When running errands try to plan your stops as efficiently as possible.

7) Choose wisely - If you own more than one vehicle, drive the one that gets better gas mileage whenever possible.

While driving your car consider these suggestions:

8) Don’t speed -  Gas mileage decreases as you reach speeds over 60 mph.

9) Be careful with acceleration - Heavy acceleration or braking while driving consumes a large amount of your vehicle’s gas. If you practice gradual acceleration and slow braking, you can contribute not only to a better earth, but safer roads.

10) Avoid idling - Vehicles with larger engines usually waste more gas while idling than those with smaller engines.

11) Use your cruise control -  Using cruise control on the highway helps maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, save gas.
Other options to consider:

12) Stagger your work hours - This is an easy way to avoid peak rush hours, spend less time sitting in traffic and consume less gas.

13) Arrange a carpool or ride-share programs -  Sharing your commute with others cuts weekly fuel costs, reduces wear on your car and may allow you to use less-congested High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

Together we can all contribute to the betterment of our climate in our everyday lives!
